A prototype of the line description system have been developed. The major goal of the system is to construct explicit, meaningful description of lines for mechanical engineering drawings. The input of the system is the vectorized form of line segments obtained from scanning the image and applying the contour tracing and line extraction algorithms. During processing, features of line segments are extracted and compared with fundamental features of line conventions recommended by ASA standard to decide what kinds of line segments they should be. The result is displayed on the color terminal by using the different color to show the different kinds of lines. Additionally, the system converts the output description to the ASCII format file which can be converted into a suitable CAD format for further use.
