  <abstract>California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and plate bearing tests (12" and 30" m. plate) were conducted in a shallow field test pit on Bangkok Clay and in a 2 deep concrete test pit in which a pavement structure consisting of  compacted clay, lateritic soil and crushed rock aggregate had been built. Extensive CBR testing was also performed in the laboratory on unoaked and  soaked samples of clay, lateritic soil and crushed rock aggregate compacted at various efforts.  CBR-values obtained in the concrete test pit were somewhat lower than laboratory values for all three materials in the unoaked condition, where  as those measured in the field test pit were slightly higher. Design CBR values were selected as 2%, 25% and 70% for the clay, lateritic soil and  crushed rock, respectively.  The coefficient of subgrade reaction, k, from 12" plate tests was about twice the value of the 3011 plate and the ratio of k-values between clay, lateritic soil and crushed rock was about 6:3 :1. In--situ soaking of clay greatly reduced the k-value. Results from repetitive plate bearing tests indicated a considerable decrease of allowable pressure with increasing number of load repetitions. Finally, the results were used for estimating the layer thickness in a rigid and flexible pavement using three different design procedures, </abstract>
