Tourism is a significant service industry. It covers many aspects of city life, including economic, social, cultural, and environment factors. There is the possibility of environmental degradation if the local environmental problems in tourism areas reach their capacity. In Yogyakarta, tourism has become a symbol for this city and there is a need to maintain its environmental quality from many aspects to help sustainable tourism development. One dimension to consider is transportation. In Yogyakarta, transportation has not been included as part of a comprehensive plan. This study aimed to identify the role of transportation in sustainable tourism in Yogyakarta and proposed recommendations to maintain the quality of life of the community. The air quality issues in transportation planning, together with convenience and health issues were examined. Issues in traffic volume, public health, parking, and tomists' mobility were considered.
