This thesis reports the details of the mechanical behavior of a trial embankment placed on the campus of AIT during a period of October 1980 -- March 1982. It contains four main parts; (1) soil properties, (2) the behavior of a foundation during and after the construction of a trial embankment, (3) the further change in behavior of a foundation caused by the excavations near the toes of the embankment together with the additional fill of the excavated material along the slopes of existing embankment, (4) the results of analysis using a Finite Element Programme. It was found that the response of the foundation was understandable in its overall behavior but was far more complicated in its local behavior.
