The purpose of this study was to investigate in the laboratory the optimum mixture of cowdung and nightsoil that would yield maximum gas production. Five laboratory scale digester units were used in the experiment. It was found that the best results were .obtained with the digester whose composition of cowdung:nightsoil = 40:60, i .e., at the organic loading of 2 kg VS/m -d, detention time of 30 days, and dilution ratio of 1:1.5, the gas yield of 0.37 l/g VS-d, average methane content of 72.6% and total and filtrate COD removal of 58 and 78%, respectively, were obtained. Although the digester performance was affected by temperature, the pH value of all digesters slurry were found to be within range of 6.8-7.45 throughout the continuous operation period. The reduction of nitrogen and phosphate was found to be about 25 and 20%, respectively.
