iv, 98 p This research investigated the operation and organization of minibuses in Hat Yai, the commercial center in southern Thailand. The purpose of this study was to establish the role of minibuses and to determine how effective t hey are as the only mode of public transport apart from samlors (cycle rickshaw). The investigate also looked at t he socio-economic background of the minibus drivers and passengers. lt was found that mini buses play an important role in public transportation in Hat Yai as they provide 98 percent of all daily transport vehicle service; and only 2 percent are provided by samlors. It is a requirement of the Land transportation Department that all minibus drivers be members of one of the minibus cooperatives of which there are three in Hat Yai. However it was apparent that not all drivers are members. Therefore, it is suggested that there be stronger enforcement of Government Controls, focussing on the number of legal minibuses and illegal ones, as the supply greatly exceeds the actual demand by passengers.
