  <abstract>A survey  of  farms  with  and  without  farm  ponds  in  integrated  crop{u2013}aquaculture   sub-systems  was  undertaken  in  three  study   sites  in  Khon  Kaen,  Kalasin  and  Maha  Sarkham  in  the  Northeast  of  Thailand,  a  region known  as  one  of  the  typical  rain-fed  rice   areas with  tropical  wet:  dry  climate.  Concrete  evidence  in  the  effectiveness  of  the  farm   ponds  in  the  Northeast  of  Thailand  has  been  presented.  The  case  of  the  NE  clearly   indicates the development of rainfed into ir rigated landscape, improvement of the seasonal  yield, the various sub-systems that can be derived leading to profitability and sustainability  in the farm.  The size of farm ponds in the three sites  was estimated to be significantly smaller  but  has  been  considered  by  the  farmers  to  have  significantly  changed  their  farming   options.  Increasing  the  size  of  the  farm  pond  allows  shifting  from  nearly  total  rice  sub- system  to a kind of  vegetable   sub-system    following   the   different   existing   crop    combination and aquaculture to attain the maximum profit during the wet and dry seasons.   Results from the LP model obtained for four options proposed were compared with  existing  systems  revealed  that  feasibility   for  significant  increase  in  farm  net  income;   maximum   being   the   Option-1  in  medium   farm   (supplementary   feeding)  with   baht  1,840,183  increased  from  baht  134,931,  and  Op tion-1 in  small  farm  baht  596,022   increased from 65,428. Findings of the optimum  farm  pond  size  and  best  combination  of   sub-system  through  water  balance  simulation  and  LP  models  helped  to  identify  which  is  profitable as well sustainable.</abstract>
