Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 2024 N2 - Concrete is the most used material after water globally. Concrete is used to construct buildings, roads, bridges, and other infrastructures. But this all comes with a cost. Cement production is one of the most CO2 emission industries, specifically 8% contributing to climate change and environmental degradation. Sustainability has always been a great challenge for construction industry. Various methods have been adopted to cut down CO2 emissions such as use of SCM{u2019}s like fly ash and silica fume, energy efficient kilns, etc. This study explores the use of silica fume and fly ash as well as limestone powder as SCMs to minimize carbon emissions without reducing the long term durability and strength of the concrete. In this study, 31 mix designs were developed by using Design of Experiments(DOE) based on preliminary lab test results and literature reviews. After being cured for 28 days, the samples were tested. Abrasion, compressive strength, water permeability, slump, and chloride penetration tests were among the tests carried out. The experimental results were used in Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to predict the RSM models. Limestone powder turns out to be good SCM for replacement in concrete made with hydraulic cement to boost the mechanical performance and durability. Also, sustainability study was carried out in terms of CO2 emissions per kg per MPa. High strength and durable were developed with cement use of as low as 255 kg/m3. Also, there was significant decrease in CO2 emissions compared to world average which is 10kg/m3/MPa to 6.42kg/m3/MPa {u2013} 4.25 kg/m3/MPa with cheaper cost than of conventional concrete. This study concluded that low cement high strength concrete can be developed with the use of limestone powder which acts as a concrete filler, filling the pores and increasing the strength substantially with minimization in cost. The prediction model presented by parallel coordinate plot can be used to select the mix as per requirements of cost and performance of the concrete UR - http://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/Viewer/viewer.php?id=B23525 ER -
