N2  - The pasture of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) is an important ecological barrier in China. However, this barrier is being broken. The harsh ecological environment not only brings great loss and disasters for local economy and livelihoods, but also compels residents to leave their ancestral villages. Although the deterioration of grassland eco-system is primitively caused by harsh climate condition and geography, the efficiency of management strategies and policies play important role to grassland conservation. With an attempt to improve eco-environment, China's Government and the Government of Australia jointly launched the Alxan Environment Rehabilitation and Management Project (AERMP) in Alxa League since 2001. This research was undertaken to investigate people's participation in pasture management project in the Alxa area of the Northwestern China for seeking appropriate strategies and policies for sustainable pasture management; to examine the extent of people's participation in planning, implementation and monitoring of pasture management activities, to analyze the factors influencing people's participation in pasture management. Based on the findings, some recommendations for institutionalizing a sustainable, participatory pasture management are given. Findings from the research showed that the participatory approach applied in pasture management projects under AERMP implemented in Alxa League generally had positive effect on mobilization of local people for pasture management activities. People were involved in terms of providing information, attending meetings and contributing cash and labor for project implementation. There are various factors influencing people's participation in pasture management activities, which have multiple impacts on local people's participation. Institutional factors were found to be important in organizing, empowering and facilitating local people's participation in pasture management activities
