In this research the probability of failure of pile foundations is considered, based on the concepts of statistics and probability applied to study the factor of safety of foundation analysis. The initial phase of the study was devoted to the probabilistic description of soil properties. The statistical evaluation of in-situ strength characteristics were performed. The field vane strength and Dutch cone data were found to follow a two-parameter beta distribution. Linear regression models were developed for the relationship between the cone resistance and local friction data for Bangkok clays. Through simulation techniques, the probability density function of the bearing capacity of pile foundations is presented from Dutch cone and vane strength values using observed field data on a number of piles of different dimensions. The coefficient of variation for bearing capacity was also determined. The probability of failure of pile foundations is computed for deterministic loads and .presented in the form of graphs which yield the required confidence level of the foundation.
