The main objective of the present study is to evaluate the presence of a commonly used organophosphate insecticide, Mevinphos, in water, fish, mussel and in chinese kale in a farm where this chemical is sprayed. The experiment was conducted in a farm at Pathum Thani where Mevinphos is used. Samples of fish, mussel, water and chinese kale were collected and analysed for the residues of the insecticide. The results indicate the presence of two insecticides Mevinphos and Diazinon. In water, levels of the two chemicals are within their permissible concentration. For mussel and fish, the Maxi mum Residue Limits (MRL) are not yet set up, and so their residue limits are compared to their respective Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) and are found to exceed the ADI values. In case of chinese kale, unwashed samples are found to contain less residues than the WHO/FAO MRL. The stem portions have higher levels than the leaves. It has been observed that boiling reduces the levels in the vegetable to negligible quantities. A similar study is undertaken at a biological farm and the sets of results are compared to that of the non biological farm in Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
