Using market samples of selected vegetables and fruits from Bangkok markets, the results of the study showed that the pesticide residue is still within tolerable limits when compared with the proposed Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) level of the WHO/FAO experts. The chlorinated hydrocarbon type of pesticide is still very much detected although not in alarming levels . Organophosphate pesticides were not detected because this type of pesticides are easily regarded and are very amenable to washing. The sampling was undertaken during the rainy season and most of the organophosphate pesticides may have been washed away by the rain. Thailand is importing large quantities of pesticides but the findings in this study indicates that the farmers of Thailand are well informed of the importance of the proper application of pesticides. Scientific and technically guided use of pesticides can very well augment the food needs of the masses. It is therefore wise and humane to tolerate the use of pesticides but clear and simple guidelines and free technical assistance should be made available to the users, by each manufacturers in order that environmental balance be maintained.
