520 _aThree free standing pile groups each consisting of four hollow hexagonal concrete piles 15 cm in diameter and 6.0 m. long, driven in Bangkok Clay at pile spacings of 3, 4 and 5 times of the pile diameter were subjected to static loads equal to half of the expected ultimate load estimated by static for mula based on field vane shear strength and an adhesion factor of 0.53. A group of four piles with an embedded pile cap, a single pile and a spread footing were also tested in the same manner. The immediate settlement and consolidation settlement of these foundations were recorded. A piezometer was installed at the center of each free standing pile group and at the midpoint of the hollow pile for a single pile. The ultimate consolidation settlements of the single pile and the pile groups were obtained from field observation data for period of 4 months. A field vane shear test, consolidation tests and triaxial tests were performed and the results obtained from these tests were then used to estimate the immediate settlement, the consolidation settlement and the pore pressures developed by various methods. The direct analysis for immediate settlement of a single friction pile using a numerical technique based an Mindlin's equations was also made. The estimated values were compared to the observed values.
