520 _aThailand, a developing country in Southeast Asia, has achieved rapid economic growth, industrialization and urbanization. Many environmental problems especially solid waste as a consequent of such developments have taken place and become a serious one. Solid wastes will threaten human health and the environment when improperly disposed. Intermediate treatment has to be included in the solid waste management system instand of conventional disposal methods, such as open dumping, which is widely used in all municipalities in Thailand. To evaluate the economic attractiveness of those, an optimization model is developed to identify the best option combined with landfill at the given potential locations. The mathematical model herein is done with the framework of dynamic optimization using mixed integer programming to achieve such a goal. The most promising alternative, the concept of expansion unit is employed into the model focusing on municipal solid waste (MSW) in the region. In this study, the model is applied for the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in Nakhon Pathom as a typical Thai city.
