520 _aThailand lies second in the country with most estimated road fatality rate. The accident cases of public transport in Thailand is notoriously higher than other countries and speeding is often the main reason for the accidents. To improve the safety of public transport, Department of Land Transport installed Global Positioning System (GPS) in fixed route bus in 2016 and it planned to install it in all public transport by the end of 2017. However, there has been no research so far to evaluate the effectiveness of GPS in reducing speed and accidents of fixed route bus. This research analyses the impact of GPS on speed and accidents of fixed route bus separately. Non-fixed route bus is used as control group for making state of the art research. Before after analysis is done for analysing both speed and accidents. Speed data from 2013, 2014 and 2017 are analysed using linear regression model and panel data model. A total of 28 sites and 10 rounds of data were available for speed analysis. Individual sites were analysed using linear regression whereas overall site analysis was done using two-way fixed effect panel data model and Difference in Differences (DID) model. Accidents statistics for fixed as well as non-fixed route bus were available for the year 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively and before after analysis was performed using Empirical Bayes (EB) method. The research highlighted that GPS has no significant effect on the speed of vehicle and although the speed of bus has reduced significantly in the year 2017, it is entirely due to the trend effect and reduction is similar in non-fixed route bus as well as fixed route bus. However, the accidents and injuries were seen to be decreasing in the post treatment period i.e. after introduction of GPS. Hence, GPS has been a mixed bag since its introduction, however owing to its other advantages like vehicle tracking, customer friendliness, ease of route etc, it is highly recommendable to continue the implementation of GPS in all categories of vehicle.
