520 _aThe study was carried out to determine the characteristics of the Faisalabad solid waste and to develop a strategy for its disposal. The physical and chemical characteristics were determined by collecting the solid waste samples from different areas, and sources. It was found that solid waste of Faisalabad contains 40 to 70% of readily decomposable material, with total organic content of 88.58%, and a moisture content of 46%. It has less recyclable items and a low calorific value of 1030 kcal/kg, which favors the composting technology. During survey, it was found that about 40% of the farmers were willing to use the municipal compost. Considering the financial and technical deficiencies of the Faisalabad Municipal Corporation the disposal strategy is divided into two parts: short term and long term. In the short term strategy it is proposed that some improvements be made in the existing system of disposal, which can be used for four years at the cost of25 rupees/ton. For the long term strategy options, namely landfilling and landfilling with composting were considered. A financial analysis found that adopting composting along with landfilling is more economical than only landfilling; about 17 rupees/ton could be saved by adopting the composting with landfilling.
