520 _aResults of laboratory studies on remoulade sand samples, from Chao- Phraya River, Bangkok, Thailand, under anisotropic consolidation are discussed in this research. The importance of initial void ratio and degree of saturation of sand samples, formed during the laboratory investigations, in relation to their reproducibility is emphasized. Furthermore the implications of the effect of confining pressure on the consolidation behaviour of sands vis-a-vis the determination of critical state parameter, ; ^, ·are examined in some detail. A procedure to estimate ^ , is suggested. Data from p' = (a' + 2a') /3 =canst. and q· =(a' - a') = const. tests on anisotropically1 consolidated sand samples are used to evaluate the parameters needed in a semi-empirical stress-strain prediction model. Predictions by Modified Cam-Clay model and the semi-empirical approach are compared with experimental results obtained by conventional drained triaxial test, anisotropic consolidation and rebound test and a special stress path depicting dq/dp = 1. 5 initially upto some stage followed by p' = canst. to failure. It is emphasized that in the case of sands,. the stress strain behavior depends on both stress path and stress history, and a semi empirical approach to prediction of stress-strain behavior has much to recommend itself.
