520 _aThe behavior of soft Bangkok clay below the State Boundary Surface is studied in detail by carrying out several drained and undrained tests under compression and extension conditions, both in normally and overconsolidated state. All OC anisotropic drained specimens are sheared with different applied stress paths at the same OCR value of 1.6. Based upon the observed experimental results shear strain, volumetric strain and plastic volumetric strain contours were drawn. The shear strain contours drawn in the normalized plot are more or less parallel to each other in wet side and tend to converge in a single point on the dry side of Critical State. From the total volumetric strain contours plot, the area within the State Boundary Surface is divided into two zones: Zone I positive or compressive volumetric strain and Zone II negative or dilational volumetric strain. According to plastic volumetric strain, the area can be divided into three zones. In Zone I, plastic volumetric strain is zero, i.e. the volumetric strain inside this zone is purely elastic in nature. Plastic volumetric strains are found to be positive and negative in Zone II and Zone III respectively. The experimental results from this investigation will provide a useful contribution toward the prediction of models.
