520 _aMost of urban planners recognized the zone system as one of the fundamental units for urban analysis. On the view point of statistics , the zoning error , which inevitably occurs through the aggregation of individual information into zone data, has a big influence on the urban analysis. Moreover , when we utilize an empirical data set to analyze the effects of spatial aggregation problem, it already includes some original error that comes from the outside of the pure science of zoning system. Therefore , this study utilized an artificial data set instead of empirical data set and try to provide a general analysis on the relationship between the zoning error and the level of aggregation (the number of zones ). It is believed that an unbiased results can be obtained by the way of random number generating data input. And the production constrained gravity model was applied throughout this study to provide a consistent analysis. The zoning error was displayed by three kinds of error indications, namely : Root-mean square error, Relative Root-mean square error and Dis- similarity index. All the three kinds of error indications successfully show the relationship between the zoning error and the level of aggregation. And it is concluded that the zone system of lower zone number possesses not only higher zoning error but also larger range in its distribution; and the zone system of higher zone number possesses not only lower zoning error but also a more concentrated distribution. The convergence can be achieved with increasing the number of zones. In this study, all the calculations were done using the machine of net work station NEWS-1850. There exists the limitation in capacity of the machine used. However, it is believed that the results obtained here are representative of the effects on spatial aggregation problem which would similarly be obtained from similar experiments done with larger data set. It will be interesting for future research to explore this problem by adopting an empirical data set which includes a sufficient amount of spatial basic units (BSUs } .
