| 520 | _aThe low crop productivity of Mu Cang Chai agriculture in this decade is thought to be a considerable lamentable problem since it causes insufficient self-support of food for population in the district. Poor cultivation method expressed through low input production ineffective cropping systems and risingly degrading environment leads to people's low living standard. This study, therefore focuses on the understanding of the practical food production system under the existing socio-economic and environment conditions of Mucangchai district -a typical mountainous area in Y enbai province. A farm survey was carried out to assess socio-economic profile concentrated on some major parameters of cropping system , particularly cropping patterns, soil fetiility, fertilization and some other involving factors, of which social factors are also concerned. Soil analysis of 40 samples was also done to estimate the soil fertility levels in the region. Soil fetiility was assessed by soil analysis from the slope and the terraced land. Through the quantity and concentration of 7 soil prope11ies, soil fertility was found at low level. Most of values of soil properties were different between two groups of terraced field and upland slope, and these two groups were much less than that of the land under the forest. The land, therefore, was estimated to be heavily degraded under the existing crop cultivation status. The . cropping systems of the study area was found to have considerable constraints such as limitations of households' low income, very low level of fertilization, ineffective farm equipment and other facilities, low yielding variety system and low application level of new technology. All of these resulted in low input-low output cropping system leading to the insufficient food demand for the local basic consumption. The approach therefore identifies all of advantages and constraints of food production and employs available information involved so that a gradual change from the old food crop production to the higher level one of higher intensive farming system can be carried out. The strategy is promoted through increase in cultivable areas and in crop yields to get higher food production. With the system approach that combined socio-institutional, economic and agronomic analytical framework, a more sustainable food crop production is recommended prior by more food production for self-sufficiency, secondly contribute to the sustainable agricultural and rural development in the study area as well as in regions with similar environment. | ||
