520 _aThis research covers an investigation of the performance in terms in terms of COD, BOD6 , and grease removals of the different biological treatment processes applied to noodle waste. This waste was typically characterized by its low volume (1.24 ± 0.17 m'.3/day) but high grease content (over 1,000 mg/l gross grease). In this particular study, the influent waste was prepared such that the grease that solidified and floated on the surface was skimmed. The grease content of the influent waste studied ranged from 100 to 400 mg/l. Filtrate COD ranged from 500 to 1,000 mg/l while BOD6 ranged from 300 to 845 mg/l. The biological processes studied were the extended aeration activated sludge, rotating tube filter, low-rate plastic packed trickling filter, and anaerobic contact process. At the loading range of 0.3882 kg COD/m'.3-day to 0.9705 kg COD per m'.3-day, the extended aeration process was found to be the most efficient in terms of COD and BOD6 removal of 76.5% and 96% respectively. However, grease removal by this process was only 25%. It could be inferred therefore, that in this process, grease had negligible effect on the biological degradation of the other substrates. The rotating tube filter gave better performance for grease removal of 60% and COD and BOD5 removal of 70% and 83% respectively. The trickling filter performance in terms of grease removal was observed to be higher than that of the rotating tube filter, about 63%. However, the COD and BOD removals were lower, 53% and 77% respectively. The high grease removal in both rotating tube filter and trickling filter would be attributed to the grease that adhered and was eventually degraded by the fixed film of these processes. On account of the low influent concentration of the waste, the anaerobic contact process showed the poorest performance with COD removal of about 25% at sludge retention time between 20 and 30 days . However, the grease removal of 37% was relatively higher than that of the extended aeration process.
