520 _aA study of the benthic macroinvertebrates was carried out to assess the water quality of the Nong Chanh Wetland in Lao P.D.R. Three stations were selected to represent the various degree of contamination, from the nearest Khua Din Market and residential area as station I, near the residential area station II, and far from the market and residential area station III. The result of analysis showed that, there was no significant different (p>0.05) in the measuring parameters of physical-chemical characteristics between the stations, except phosphate concentrations. The higher value (1.56 mg/l), were observed nearby the market place and residential area over the less polluted site (station III). The total number of macroinvertebrates taxa were higher in station II and III than station I. There was significantly higher in benthic macroinvertebrates abundance in station II than station III and I. The three dominant taxonomic groups were Thiaridae, Chironomidae and Oligicheata, while the Lymnaeidae was the lowest in number of population. Thiaridae, Chironomidae and Oligocheata were dominant groups of station II. Thiaridae and Chironomidae were dominant in May, whle Oligochaeta was dominant in August. This may due to the availability of food enrichment and their living conditions. Calculation of Shannon Diversity Index showed that, there were no different in diversities of benthic macroinvertebrates between study stations I, II and III (1.490, 1.202, 1.525) respectively. Two biotic indices: BMWP and ASPT were suggested of water quality and confirmed that, there were low in Biotic Indices (ASPT-score equal to 3.00) for all stations, which indicated as very poor or bad water quality in this wetland. Non-point pollution therefore detoriate not only water chemistry but also benthic macroinvertebrates characteristics and community diversity in the wetland. Due to the future of wetland improvement program, this study further strengthens the viewpoint that wetland management consideration should be implemented to lessen the impact on water quality as well as wetland ecosystem. Not should be made here that chemical and physical characteristics alone seem not to be adequate to assess lake water quality. Biological monitoring could be incorporated as indicated by this study.
