520 _aThe problem of wave forces acting on a fixed flat plate was studied through theory and experiment. The static-dynamic theory has been employed to analyze the wave force consisting of impact force component and static force component. The impact force component is the force arised from the striking of water particles on the plate. The static force is the force induced by wave motion even no structure there. Linear wave theory has been considered in the analysis. Regular progressive wave traveling in uniform water depth was adopted in the experiments. A semi-empirical formula can be used to estimate the wave force F = 6.16 _4 s_L H_L yLHb tanh kd(14h'2 H + 0.51 {1_4{u2AEA} [(1-cos ks) sinót + sin ks cosót] -s_L h'_H} The impact coefficient 6.16 and static coefficient 0.51 were determined respectively by the writer's experimental data. It shows that the semi empirical formula is in good agreement with the experimental results. The time duration of the acting force is the criterion for determining whether the impact force or static force is dominated. It has been found that considerable magnitude of wave force can be reduced by the compressibility of air in the space between the plate and the still water surface and a leading vertical barrier extending below the water surface.
