520			_aThis is an exploratory study to understand certain aspects of t he emergence of entrepreneurs hip, specifically, among women in the slums of Metro Manila. Another part of the study focused on assessing the current assistance programmes available to small entrepreneurs among t he urban poor . The experiences of fifty-five women in different types of enterprises residing in one blighted slum community of Malabon and two recently upgraded sites of Quezon City and Caloocan City have been investigated to provide answers to the first objective. Women in the slums go into business primarily for economic gain of the family. The choice as to which types of enterprise to put up is greatly encouraged by an anticipation of the potential high demand for the product. Advice and support of family and relatives and other factors play a minor but still influential role in their final decision to go into business. An examination of the background of these women revealed interesting points. Women with higher levels of education have better comparative advantage over those with lower education in terms of access to more credit facilities and markets for their products . But education is not an important predisposing factor to a woman's entry into entrepreneurial activities as evidenced in the study . In a related manner, very few received special training in business or other useful skills. The women entrepreneurs ' family background to a limited extent was a decisive factor to their entry into business. Entrepreneurship appears to be a prefer red option among married women mainly due to the convenience in time allocation it allows them to perform other multiple roles . The study also assessed the assistance availed by the women in the course of their setting up their business. This revealed, too, that no special program for women entrepreneurs exists among these agencies . Based on the findings of t his study and in consideration of its limitations, some recommendations both for entrepreneurial development among women in the slums study have been offered.
