520 _aThe blocking of cage wheels in wet clay soil is one of the problems which has not so far been studied in detail. A series of experiments were conducted with the help of a model lug in a quasi-static condition to investigate some important facts about cage wheel blocking. During the studies on soil deformation under a single lug it was observed that the deformation zone consists of two distinct zones, an elliptical soil wedge and a zone of plastic flow. Lug angle, trench spacing and lug slip affected the soil behaviour under a single lug but lug angle and slip did not have much effect on wedge area over a single lug. Soil deformation and wedge formation differed in many ways from that assumed in existing soil mechanics theory. The soil behaviour under multiple lugs was quite different than under a single lug. Lug spacing and lug slip affected the soil behaviour under multiple lugs considerably. Two types of blocking mechanisms were explored. In one case at slip less than 100% and low lug Spacing, during the first pass, a soil mass on the succeeding lug was held, and at each subsequent passes, more and more soil was pushed in between the lugs, till the space between the lugs blocked with mud. In another blocking mechanism which occurred at 100% slip, soil was accumulated at each pass due to digging in of the lugs and finally the lugs filled completely with the soil, making the wheel drum shaped. The amount of soil added between the lugs was a function of wheel sinkage. In. order 11) avoid soil adherence, Teflon tape coating on a lug proved to be most promising potential solution.
