| 520 | _aNetwork adaptation feature is left open in the previous video coding standards. Thus the quality of video sequences compressed by video codec like H.263 and MPEG family may fall dramatically when they are carried over error prone environments. This situation was well recognized and motivated the target to include the network friendliness into the H.264 on-going ITU-T video coding project. During the standard development process, new Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) concept has been defined to deals with special properties of transmission environments. Mobile channels exhibits very high bit error rate and errors tend to occur in bursts. Among measures to combat with these phenomena, forward error control (FEC) is an efficient tool. In this thesis, we have found that the turbo code with transfer function (1, 13/15)oct produced the best rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes given constraints on the characteristics of mobile wireless channels and video communications. Using the designed RCPT code, we then considered three FEC schemes in connection with H.264 NAL concept for high perfo1mance video transmission over third generation mobile channels. Three investigated FEC approaches were: equal e1rnr protection (EEP), unequal error protection (UEP) - a practical application of joint source channel coding and channel-adaptive coding (CAC). The results shown that at high SNR, EEP scheme with rate 1/2 RCPT code yielded the best performance while at low SNR, EEP scheme with rate 1/3 RCPT code improved significantly video quality compared with the other schemes. The CAC scheme was an optimized combination of EEP schemes therefore CAC is the best choice for H.264 constant bit rate video transmission. The results also shown that the current normative H.264 data partitioning approach does not provide distinguished improvements comparing with non-partitioned mode in case of constant bit rate transmission context. Thus further modification for H.264 data partitioning is required if this tool is deployed for video transmissions over 3G mobile systems. | ||
