520 _aAsian old corrugated container (OCC) is found in many supply sources. This product has a high percentage of recycled materials in its pulp furnish, which influences its strength quality. In addition, the producers located in different areas have different OCC sources and different collecting strategies. Therefore, the Asian OCC properties differ from region to region in strength and some other papermaking qualities. Because of the raw material differences between an Asian OCC and OCC produced domestically in North America (AOCC) and Europe OCC (EOCC), we can expect differences in the material component of them and the differences in recyclability. Three kinds of Asian OCC, including OCC of China(COCC), Local(Thai) mill OCC(LOCC) and Singaporean OCC(SOCC) were used in this experiment to compare with EOCC and AOCC. Data for EOCC and AOCC was obtained from the literature. To evaluate properties of different OCC pulp, firstly all OCC were soaked for delamination from outside liner, inside liner, fluting and the whole board OCC pulp. Then each Asian OCC pulps were compared with each other to generate a benchmark data for identification of their pulp and fiber properties. Then the laboratory hand sheets were prepared with basic weight 120 g/m2 based on the all OCC pulp. The physical properties tests and impurities content were measured for all hand sheets made from different OCC pulp. It was found that the average fiber length of LOCC and SOCC are larger than COCC, COCC has obviously more fines than any other two Asian OCC whereas the fine content of SOCC is the least. COCC has much more ash content, acid insoluble ash content and starch content than LOCC and SOCC. Both LOCC and SOCC hand sheets are smoother than COCC hand sheets, and LOCC is better than SOCC in terms of this. Hand sheets made by LOCC have higher density and better strength properties than COCC and SOCC except in Scott bond and Ring crush test, SOCC behave the best, especially for its liner pulp. Hand sheet made by COCC also has evidently much more impurities than LOCC, EOCC, whereas the impurities in EOCC hand sheets are the lowest. Compare Asian OCC to AOCC and EOCC, AOCC has much longer average fiber length, higher compressive strength than both Asian OCC and EOCC judged based on SCT and RCT reading. However, Asian OCC and EOCC have better surface smoothness than AOCC. Asian OCC and EOCC have acid-insoluble ash content component, which in AOCC doesn't exist. Hand sheets made by AOCC were much stronger than those made by Asian OCC and EOCC, and EOCC is similar to Asian OCC in comparison of strength properties.
