520 _aSeveral parameters and corresponding performance of the reinforced concrete column cross-sections (square, rectangular, circular, T-shape, I-shape, cross-shape, L-shape and C-shape) under different loading conditions have been studied in order to determine the suitable cross-sections for strength and ductility. In study of each cross-section shape, parameters include compressive strength of concrete (fe), tensile strength of steel (fy), steel ratio (AsiA;), and load ratio (Pu/Pn) and bending direction. All sections have been analyzed under uniaxial and biaxial bending, and consequently, the moment capacity and flexural ductility of the cross-sections were determined. In order to demonstrate the behavior and performance of the sections in terms of strength and ductility, CSI Section Builder software has been used to generate the P-M interaction surface and moment-curvature relationship for each section. Considering the different sections, number of parameters in every section and various loading conditions, a total of around 1,800 cases were generated. In this regard, comparison was performed by means of setting the cross-sectional area constant while changing the other variables. The procedures started within each section shape, and then comparisons were made a cross the section in order to determine the appropriate cross-section for strength and ductility. Results of the study have extracted and compiled on the tables. The result are deemed very useful in the preliminary design stage of important structures such as buildings with complicated column geometry and high architectural demand, bridges piers, and hydraulic structures as it gives a practical guide in selecting the appropriate section.
