520 _aA field survey was conducted in Trung Chinh and Cam Hoang communes in the Red River Delta, Vietnam. The information was gathered relating to all seasons of 1995 at farm household level as well as from secondary sources. Paddy crops were the main source of income but were mainly used for farmer household consumption. However the other on-farm income, especially cash income derived from horticulture, aquaculture and livestock husbandry (V AC system) have begun to play important role in improving the living condition of the farmers in the context of limited land resources. The aim of study is to analysis and compare the characteristics of traditional and so called 'improved' VAC systems, with particular reference to levels investment and income derived from them. The traditional VAC system concentrated investment in paddy crop production and used by-products to raise fattening pig. The farmer households in the improved V AC system are bold in investment strategies in their search for high income, therefore the land resources were used efficiently in term of high investment and also get high income. Thus, the gross margin in aquaculture and livestock husbandry in improved VAC system is higher than in the traditional one. However, lack of technical knowledge and the often fluctuating market price caused some failures in raising broilers, piglets and fingerling production in the improved VAC system. However, the farming system of improved VAC was more diversified than traditional VAC.
