520 _aA study is carried out to analyze the cost and efficiency of existing collection and transportation system of solid waste and design a appropriate collection and transportation system of solid waste, most suitable under the prevailing condition without affecting the economy, for the city of Lahore, Pakistan. The traditional time and motion study technique was applied to study the proposed system of collection and transportation of solid waste. The city for this purpose divided into three main areas i.e., walled city, semi-developed area and developed area, different in sense that main feature of each area can be related to its town planning. The quantity of solid waste collected by the existing system is 1569.6 tons/day which is 71 % of the total waste generated. The overall cost of collection and transportation of solid waste is found to be 524 Rs/ton or 1.9 kg/Rs of waste collected. This high cost is due to the improper allocation of vehicles in different zones and town planning constraints. During field survey two basic measure of efficiency were examined, which were the average time spent on collection of waste as a measure of the efficiency of collection crew/and the total waste collected and transported per trip as an other measure of the ยท efficiency of collection vehicle. In analysis, concentration was on to examine the interaction of equipment utilization and crew efficiency of collection vehicles by varying the truck size. Truck types and crew productive times were determined the least as the cost alternatives. The results of study show that bullock cart and arm-roll truck is the most economical combination for the collection and transportation of solid waste in walled city. In semi-developed area it is economical with open top truck (capacity 8 m3) for residential area and arm-roll truck for commercial area. Similarly 8 m3 compactor and arm-roll truck combination is economical for developed area. The total cost of collection and transportation of proposed is 325 Rs/ton or 3.1 kg/Rs of waste collected, which in comparison to existing system is found to be 38 % more efficient.
