520 _aThe convergence of multimedia technology with the telecommunications industry, television, movie, music, news, and education media is widely accepted. Large and complex structures are multimedia characteristics. Therefore, the management of multimedia databases needs special kind of conceptual frameworks, operations and processing. A system which allows users to input/output, store and manipulate multimedia data as well as to transverse and browses along the complex relationships is called a multimedia database. Traditional data models are very limited and unable to model clearly multimedia databases and their requirements. This dissertation describes the required features of multimedia databases and proposes a deductive object-oriented data model which meets the requirements of the multimedia databases. The deductive object-oriented data model integrates the deductive, the object-oriented and the hypertext dat6a models. This new data model is able to model all of the requirements of multimedia databases. The proposed data model should be used as multimedia database model and hypermedia application model. There are four layers in this model: First, the storage model and mechanisms for structuring and manipulating multimedia data. Second, the navigation model for linking and browsing multimedia data. Third, the query processing for retrieving multimedia objects from the database and grammar for the query language name (DOSQL) which allows user to query objects from the database and composite the presentation from this language. Fourth, the presentation model of multimedia data to present the synchronize and superimposition between these multimedia data. To show the ability of this data model, a prototype namely, IGIS (Intelligent Geographic Information System) has been implemented. IGIS demonstrates the power of the proposed model by showing that it can model temporal and spatial multimedia data objects.
