520 _aA test section was conducted on a section of an actual buried pipe laying project in Bangkok subsoil . This flexible pipe was installed in a trench excavated with the help of braced sheet pile . The deflection of the pipe and the ground movements were closely monitored to evaluate the effect of overburden and surcharge loads and ground movements on the response of the pipe. It was found that a large ground surface settlement , 2.08%- 4 . 33% of trench depth , developed at the end of the completion of backfilling and sheet pile pulling. The maximum lateral ground movement toward the trench was approximately the same of the maximum settlement. The settlement further increased by 27% to 4396 at the end of the following three weeks while the lateral displacement remained almost unchanged . This large ground movement has great effect on pipe deflection and thus the back calculated value of soil reaction modulus (E') of the backfill from the Iowa formula. The E ' value is in the range of 303 - 976 ksc when backfill to 1.2 m above pipe. The effect of sheet pile pulling on the reduction of E' also observed , its value ranges from 105-214 ksc. At the end of construction, E' is 112 - 462 ksc, which is higher than that suggested by U.S.B.R. guideline. Furthermore, it also show that even voids left after sheet pile pulling did not reduce the E' value drastically as expected probably due to the compensating effect of large inward lateral ground movement .
