520 _aA multidisciplinary survey was conducted in the Punjab and Sind, provinces of Pakistan, with the objective of defining the problems in water management faced by farmers which explain the consequent low yields and cropping intensity achieved with the available water supply. Forty watercourses in 16 villages were surveyed in detail and a sample of approximately 25% of the farmers in the area, totaling 389, was collected. Three major types of data were completed through farmers interview, mapping of agricultural resources and through measurement of water in standard irrigation evaluations. The resulting data are composed of farmer level data, and cropping region-agro-climatic zone level data totaling 603 variables. The stepwise multiple regression technique is used in the study to determine the factors affecting irrigation efficiencies viz. water appli cation efficiency and water conveyance efficiency. A series of regression models was developed to note the behaviour of the selected independent variables, among the 603 variables, at various stages. The soil moisture deficiency and amount of water applied are revealed as the major factors which explain 60% of variability of water application efficiency whereas the actual moga discharge (watercourse inlet), average nucca discharge (field inlet) and watercourse slope are the major factors which explain 45% of variability of conveyance efficiency.
