520 _aThe purpose of this study is to investigate the application of metakaolin from Thailand for enhancing the property and durability of mortar and concrete. The experimental program is divided into two parts. The first part is the feasibility study of using metakaolin in Thailand as cement replacement. Kaolin deposils all over Thailand were identified and preliminary testing for the properties are conducted and three kaolin deposits situated in Northern, Central and Southern of Thailand are primarily selected for detailed investigation. Finally, two of three sources are selected based on their high strength activity index and quantity of kaolin deposit. The optimum activated conditions are experimentally determined for each type of kaolin. The second part deals with an experimental investigation of the preperties and durability of mortar and concrete containing metakaolin. The main variables are the percent replacement of metakaolin and water to binder ratio. The properties of mortar containing metakaolin include the permeability, compressive strength, weight loss due to acidic attack, length change due to alkali-silica reaction, drying and autogenous shrinkage at different ages. For concrete containing metakaolin, the compressive strength, the length change due to drying and autogenous shrinkage are also carried out. Furthermore, the testing of strength model for metakaolin-mortar based on Tahir's work is also conducted. The chemical composition and fineness of metakaolin are taken into account in the proposed model. Test results showed that the metakaolin obtained from Ranong Province located in the Southern part of Thailand, is most effective and can be used as supplementary cementing material to enhance the durability of mortar and concrete. The metakaolin conforms to ASTM C618. class N pozzolan specifications. The optimum activated conditions for the kaolin deposit are the burning temperature of 800ÚC for a duration of six hours. The highest compressive strengths at all ages of mortar and concrete were obtained in mixes containing 30% of metakaolin. Regarding the durabiltiy of mortar containing metakaolin, the metakaolin is significantly effective in reducing the expansion due to alkali silica reaction. The magnitude of expansion is decreased as the level of metakaolin replacement is increased, while the water to binder ratio did not play an important role. The incorporation of metakaolin in mortar leads to refinement of the pore structure and decreases the permeability ratio. The volume stability and autogenous shrinkage are also reduced. The magnitude of length changes of mortar containing metakaolin is sharply decreased, when the percent replacement of metakaolin increases. Moreove, the 40% replacement of ordinary Portland cement by metakaolin markedly increases the resistance of mortar to acidic attack. For concrete containing metakaolin, the durability characteristics exhibited the same trend, but the deterioration rate in concrete is less than that in mortar. The proposed model based on Tahir's work is capable of satisfactorily predicting the strength development of mortar containing metakaolin.
