| 520 | _aThe objective of the study is to develop a feeding strategy for muscovy ducks utilizing fibrous feeds and to assess the implications for integrated duck- fish farming . The study was initiated by conducting a rapid rural appraisal (RRA) in Udon Thani Province of Northeast Thailand in order to obtain information from farmers on the existing muscovy duck and fish farming systems. Feeding systems were studied with reference to the seasonal availability of indigenous feeds and samples of some of these feeds were take n for nutrient analysis . An experiment was designed to study the effect of four different feeding strategies based on plane of nutrition of the starter and grower diets for a 12 week growing period. Strategy 1 (Sl ) was to feed ducks on high nutritional plane of starter diet for 6 weeks, subsequently followed by high nutritional plane of grower diets for another 6 weeks. S2 and S3 were high nutritional plane of starter diet for 6 and 3 weeks, and subsequently foll owed by low nutritional plane of grower di e t for 6 and 9 weeks, respectively . S4 was low nutritional plane of starter diet for 6 weeks and subsequently followed by low nutritional plane of grower diets for another 6 weeks. Muscovy ducks were able to utilize efficiently a fibrous di e t with low protein and energy. It is necessary to feed a high p l a n e of nutrition for 3 weeks of a duck's starter period prior to feeding on the fibrous diet in order to attain good growth . However, feeding this high plane of nutrition as astrarter diet cannot be justified during the dry season in the study site of Udon Thani Province due to unavailability of sufficient protein ingredients and low market demand for muscovy ducks . If muscovy duck production is integrated with fish production which requires a continuous supply of waste materials, feeding a low plane of nutrition as a starter diet is possible during the dry season e v e n though duck growth rate is reduced. | ||
