520 _aIn order to make a design model more practical as a design tool, special structures have to be incorporated in the design of drainage systems. Including just the cost of special structures into the design does not lead to the least cost design of the whole system. This is because the interactions between special structures and the system are neglected. In this study, the design of special structures and their interactions were considered at the same time in the optimization model. Pumping stations were first incorporated in the model so as to obtain the optimal number and positioning of the pumping stations. Secondly, the interactions between storage volume and design outflow were considered after incorporating the storm detention basin. Thus, the optimal positioning of the basin and the optimal balance between storage and downstream costs could be obtained. The model was successfully tested on an IBM PC. The optimization model is based on non-uniform state increment dynamic programming with four - dimensional state variable using pipe elevation, pipe diameter, time of flow, and design peak flow as parameters.
