520 _aAir entraining vortex flow at a pump intake was observed. An analytical model was developed to estimate the rate of air entrainment. It was found that the air entrainment by vortex flow at an intake can not be assessed without consideration of the hydraulics of the entire system. Model criteria currently suggested in the literature for testing conditions for incipient air entrainment were found to be inadequate.
