| 520 | _aIn this study, the influence of rotary inertia of shear walls and floor slabs on dynamic response of tall buildings is presented. In order to facilitate the analysis, an approximate three dimensional analysis of asymmetric wall-frame building subjected to lateral dynamic load (5) is used together with the assumptions that the mass of the structure is concentrated at the floor levels and each floor is all owed to have three degrees of freedom, namely, two horizontal translations and rotation in plane. Assuming that the connections of frames with the shear wall are rigid, a comparison of dynamic response with and without the inclusion of .rotary inertia of floor slabs and shear wall is made . Since a perfect rigidity is very rarely met in practice, a comparison is al so made by dropping the inertia of floor slabs in the above analysis. The influence of inertia terms on shear force and bending moment are also presented. The significance of these effect s in connection with the number of sotries are also included in this thesis. In the analysis, two multi-story buildings, in which each floor plan has an axis of symmetry, are studied. Each building is subjected t o an earthquake in the direction normal to its axis of symmetry. It is found in t he hypothetical case where the rigidity of the connection between the shear wall and a floor is perfect, the rotary inertia of the building produces considerable effects on both high-rise buildings and low buildings. It is also found that the inclusion of rotary inertia of shear wall only gives smaller effects on tall buildings and very little or no effect on low buildings. | ||
