| 520 | _aThe response of reconstituted soft Bangkok clay on electro-osmotic consolidation was investigated using the small cylinder electro-osmotic cell and the large consolidometer. Test results indicated that employing electro-osmosis (EO) to induce consolidation produced 3 to 4.4 times faster rate of consolidation (and an increase in shear strength with the reduction of water content The improvement of the soil induced by electro-osmosis was dependent on several factors such as electric potential and soil chemistry. It was found out that the duration of polarity reversal interval for a certain applied electric potential had affected the shear strength distribution and differential settlement between the electrodes. The application of electro-osmosis develops a pH gradient across the electrodes across the treated soil. However, introducing polarity reversal technique during the application minimized pH gradient A lesser change in pH content with lesser polarity reversal duration at constant voltage gradient was observed. After the treatment, corrosion was visible at electrodes. There was a reduction in electro-conductivity down to as low as 93 o mho/mm with the treatment time that conforms to the decreasing test results performed by Chaudhary (1998) performed in an oedometer test. There was a decrease in salinity, following the same pattern of results as electro-conductivity since, there was no direct observation that was done to determine the salinity of the sample. Salinity was determined from the empirical formula given by Jackson which is directly proportional to electro-conductivity. From pH results, it showed that there was a development of saline condition around the cathode area, thus obtaining an incorrect value of salinity. Afte~ the treatment, organic content dropped from a value of 5.5% down to as low as 4.2%. Current density had also reduced with treatment. | ||
