520 _aA study on energy used in TISTR alcohol pilot plant, a production capacity of 1500 litres anhydrous alcohol per day was conducted . The total energy consumption of the plant was 21202.87 MJ/day . It comprised of 97.5% fuel oil and 2 . 5% electricity , by quantity or 88 . 5% and 11.5% of the total energy bill for fuel oil and electricity respectively. Significant amount of energy , 99% of total energy , is distributed to the distillation process. The energy and availability analyses are used to identified locations, type and true magnitudes of waste energy, including losses and irreversibility from the system. These illustrated that the first law efficiency of boiler are 63 . 60% and 78.09% for the worst and best case respectively. And the major losses are losses due to dry flue gas and uncounted loss . The second law efficiency of boiler is 16.34% for the worst case and 20 . 06% for the best case. Energy conservation opportunities in the thermal energy systems are identified , analyzed and recommended. For the steam generation system , the installation of economizer is recommended to reduce the flue gas temperature . The possible saving is approximately 30468 Baht/year. In distillation, economic return of the potential conservation measures , by using heat pump , are analysed . Two heat pump systems are recommended. One is the reboiler flashing system, the possible saving is approximately 132987 Baht/year with nine month payback period. The other is external working fluid system. It provided a 75288 Baht/year of net saving and 2 . 2 year payback period . The application of membrane technology, pervaporation, was carried out to study the feasibility of replacing azeotropic distillation by pervaporation process to reduce significant amount of energy consumption in distillation process.
