520 _aThe soils in the vicinity of the city of Chiang Mai consist mainly of fluvial deposits, namely, floodplain deposits, coarse-grained and fine-grained terrace deposits as well as residual soils and swamp deposits. These soil formations are genetically associated with the landforms they are found. The landform features in the area include gravelly terrace, sandy terrace, recent floodplain and swamps. Foundation subsoils are mainly medium to stitf sandy clay and medium to dense sand with some gravels. Construction aggregates used in the city are limestone as crush stone, sand and gravel with the estimated quantity of 132,000; 205 ,200 and 33,000 cu m/year respectively. Water supply is obtained from the Ping river, irrigation canal, reservoirs and groundwater. Solid waste disposal method is open dumping which will ne replaced by sanitary landfill in the near future. The amount of solid waste produced in the city at present is 172,658 cu m/year and is estimated to be 473,333 cum/year in the year 2000. Liquid waste disposal system tor night soils is pour-squatting plate-cesspool system; sullage or waste water is discharged into storm water drainage system. Seismic risk of the city is estimate in terms of intensity and ground motion parameters. The city is estimated to subject to an intensity of 0.76 on Modifies Mercalli scale or an acceleration of 1.84 cm/sg sec every year. Delineation of flood-prone area is carried out based on surface characters and proximity to water courses. Two types of flooding are found, namely, flooding due to overflow of the Ping river and flooding due to poorly drained condition of the area after heavy rain.
