520 _aWaterways pollution and frequent localized flooding in Metro Manila h ave been and continue to be two serious environmental problems in the metropolis. Its adjoining wat erbodies, particul arly Pasig Rjver system and Manila Bay, are in the same deplorable condition. This study t herefor e, presents and evaluates the waterways environmental related problems, through the integration of secondary data, field investigations, interviews and spatial analysis to visualize the severity and causes of the problem. Natural waterways pollution aggTavated by localized flooding has resulted in an adverse impacts which t hreatens and lowered the h ealth of Metro Manila residents. Spatial analysis revealed that wat er and waste related diseases are commonly severe and s erious in areas not served by sanitation f acilities, and flood prone. Frequent localized flooding on the oth er h and, is attributed to man - made alterations of natural waterways being used as natural drainage of the metropolis. It can be gleaned from t his study that waterways environmenta l problems are rel ated to the complex problems facing Metro Manil a. Inadequate and unmaintained s ewerage and wastewater treatment facilities both in domestic an d industri al sources, solid waste misman agement, s quatter encroachment on natural waterways and rapid urban growth charact erized by unabated rural - nrban migration, are th e major culprHs of Metro Manila's waterways pollution and localized flooding. These problems continuously worsen due to the socio - economic and political conditions facing the metropolis. Lael<. of studies and res earch conducted on this topic signify the negligence on the part of the government to address this growing· problem. An incremental approach is r ecommended to mitigate and lessen the resulting impact.
