520 _aThis study aimed to investigate the large-scale failure mechanism of a mining waste dump that occurred in the Mae Moh Mine, Thailand, as well as to study the possibility of dumping to the designed final elevation. The study has two main objectives, including the evaluation of the failure mechanism by performing back analysis using numerical modelling considering different scenarios that could have been present during the time of failure. These scenarios include the degree of consolidation, the elevation of the potential existing perched water table, and the variation of shear strength of the materials. The second objective is to employ the obtained representative numerical model to assess the feasibility of dumping waste to the final elevation as planned. This will be achieved through parametric studies, with a focus on the dumping rate and the rate of perched water table rising during the construction period. Additionally, an evaluation of potential ground improvement techniques for these conditions will also be conducted.The study's scope includes reviewing existing information, such as descriptions of the event of interest, the contour/topography of the study area before and after failure, laboratory testing results of materials from various sources, geotechnical review reports, and related literature. The study then utilizes numerical analysis software to achieve its two objectives. Results validation will be based on actual field observations during the time of failure, as well as related studies conducted in similar areas.Overall, the study demonstrated the usefulness of using numerical modeling (FEM) to investigate the instability behavior of the mining waste dump at Mae Moh Mine and to study future dump constructions. Its key contribution includes providing the back calculated shear strength parameters of the materials, essential for conducting routine stability analysis to assess the waste dump's stability during design and construction.Furthermore, the study presents simplified guidelines for future dump constructions to safely reach the final elevation.
