| 520 | _aLow to mid-rise RC frame with masonry infills are the most preferable construction in urban areas of Nepal. These buildings are constructed following the building code implemented by Government of Nepal. Although Nepal has implemented the building code, these codes do not consider the influence of masonry infill on the overall structural response. It is important to evaluate the seismic demands with sufficient accuracy to design and construct earthquake resistant structures. Most of the engineers in Nepal prefer code based standard RSA procedure to evaluate the seismic demands. However, recent studies suggest that RSA procedure underestimates the seismic demands. This study focusses on application of MRSA procedure to variety of low to midrise infilled RC frame buildings. MRSA procedure uses the concepts of UMRHA and Equivalent Linearization method. The underlying concept is that the linear elastic model with elongated period and additional damping can approximately represent the nonlinear seismic demands. 12 typical buildings from Nepal are selected from 116 random samples. These selections are based on architectural and structural features of the buildings. The selected buildings are of 2 to 5 story residential, residential plus commercial and residential plus office buildings. MRSA process is applied to obtain the seismic demands of the buildings. It is observed that these types of buildings under larger ground shakings show soft story effect with significant change in mode shape. The change in mode shape is incorporated in the MRSA procedure and seismic demands of all the buildings are obtained. MRSA procedure is predicting the seismic demands in both global and component level with reasonable accuracy while there is a clear underestimation by Standard RSA procedure. Seismic demands obtained from NLTHA method is used as benchmark to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. | ||
