520 _aLaboratory tests were conducted to investigate the effects of confinement at different pressures on discharge capacity of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD). Two types of PVDS were tested, namely: Mebra (MD7667A) and CN (Al). The test results indicated Mebra (MD7667 A) consistently yielded higher discharge capacity than CN (Al) because its filter jacket of Mebra (MD7667A) has higher tensile strength than CN (Al). Thus, the tensile strength of filter jacket significantly affected the discharge capacity of PVD. Moreover, the higher water contents of remolded clay confinement may also cause more deformation in the surrounding clay and may caused bending in the PVD. In the case, the PVD bending may have contributed fmther to the reduction of discharge capacity. For the settlements predicted of Reference Section at the Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA), the settlements predicted by the PVD-SD software Version 2.3 and Asaoka's method were in good agreement with the observed data. However, the PVD-SD software was found to be quite useful are for the case of multi-layer soils having different physical prope1ties for each laye:r improvement with PVD. In addition, the back-calculated values of discharge capacity, %v, using the method of Asaoka agreed within the range of other investigators. Finally, the concept of removing piezometric level drawdown using PVDs was also observed in the filed test at the AIT campus. From the observed data, the PVD was effective in recharging the ground to remove the piezometric level drawdown up to the depth of PVD installation.
