| 520 | _aShortage of water for daily consumption in remote areas is one of major problem which has been addressed in the Sixth National Development Plan . In order to overcome this problem and to satisfy the people's basic needs for water, the RTG has po1icies to offer rural piped water supply systems based on local people 's participation in order to ensure that the scheme can be sustained and successful in achieving its objectives. Since t he construction of piped water systems requires a large investment and operation costs to maintain the systems efficiently, it is also expensive. This research study is, therefore, an attempt to evaluate this investment and its impacts on the communities, to assess the degree of people's participation in the VPWP and to find out possible methods of improvement in the management of village pip d water system. The main findings of the research show that the average and/or wealthy and progressive villages get the priority in receiving t h e VPWP. Moreover, with in the project communities, the high income people had more chance to access and/or get benefit. from the piped water project In the context of people ' s participation in each sub-activity of the VPWP, i.t seems to be-') very low . Under the scheme, projects are accepted on condition that. contributions either in cash or in kind are made by the beneficiaries to cover a part of the project's expenditure. This implies that community ' s participation was compulsory. it is not voluntary participation, but. forced by the rules. Regarding the impact of the VPWP on the communities , ranking to the note that most villager gave the highest ranking to the reduction in drudgery , greater comfort and convenience as the main benefits. Some of the villagers mentioned that time and energy saved in obtaining water leaves them with more free time. An unfortunate discovery was the time and energy saved from not transporting water was not used for some other productive works in order to increase income. The reasons behind this is that the villagers did not know what to do with the time saved in terms of funding extra earnings apportunities. This may be imply the need for urgent attention from the concerned TRG agencies. Recommendations have been presented for improving and planning of the VPWP. In addition. recommendation for further study concerned with this issue which, need to be considered, are made in this thesis study | ||
