| 520 | _aAnaerobic digestion is a process of bacterial breakdown of organic matter during which a combustible gas, methane is produced. The use of biogas digesters for providing cooking fuel in the developing countries is a major application of the process at present. A major factor which limits the impact of biogas units is their capital cost. One objective of this study has been to conduct and test a cowdung digester incorporating two interesting features-Plug Flow and Biofilm. It is found that the digester can utilise organic matter much faster - the gas production per day per unit digester volume being about ten times compared to reported gas production in conventional digesters. This means that to obtain the same amount of gas production the size of digester based on this design would be much smaller than that based on conventional design. Theoretical analysis of a conventional Plug Flow reactor with recycle and a Plug Flow reactor with biofilm, based on Contois Kinetic equation, has also been presented. | ||
