520 _aBangkok is experiencing a rapid economic growth. As a symbol of economic success, the demand for private cars has increased tremendously and cars have become a necessity for Bangkokians' life. Hence, traffic conditions are becoming critical in Bangkok. Therefore, improvement of traffic condition has become an extremely urgent and important issue in Bangkok Metropolis. This study analyzed the automobile ownership behavior of Bangkolt households. Data were collected through a random questionnaire survey of 949 respondents mostly from the offices within the Bangkok Metropolis. The characteristics of households and the existing policy measures were examined to identify the major cause for the higher automobile ownership of households. The automobile ownership was analyzed by both macro and micro approaches. In micro level, the multinomial logit model was used to find the choice behavior of automobile ownership level of households . In addition, multiple regression model was developed to make rough estimation of average automobile ownership level of households. In macro level, a linear regression was developed using national and regional variables such as GRP and GRP per capita to estimate the total number of vehicles. The same variable, as used in the linear regTession, was used to fit the growth of passenger cars by logistic curve fitting technique. The multinomial logit model was used to identify the various policy measures that could be implemented to control the growth rate of automobile ownership. The results of the analysis showed that the increase in fuel price impart more effect on automobile ownership than that of market price of automobiles. The identified dominant factors for automobile ownership on household side are: household income, number of license holders in the house, number of workers in the house and spouse working. Therefore, it is recommended to implement some control measures over the issue of drivers license to control automobile ownership. to a little extent. In addition, monetary disincentives such as increase in fuel price and increase in market price of automobiles could be used to induce desirable household's behavior on automobile ownerships.
