520 _aThis study is conducted on the existing solid waste management and recycling system in Yangon City, Myanmar. A special focus is in recycling of plastic materials from municipal solid waste system, residential, commercial and institutions. The waste generation in Yangon is estimated to be 2200 ton/day out of which Yangon municipal authorities known as Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) collects 787 tons/day with the collection efficiency of 54%. Among the wastes, wastes from kitchen comprises 60%, market 15%, hotel 2%, garden 5%, commercial 10% and others 8%. These wastes include 55.3% of food wastes, 10.48% of paper, 11.03% of plastic, 2.3% of dust, 2.18% of textiles, 4.39% of garden trimmings, 3.54% of glass, 2.72% of metal, 2.8% of rubber and 8.06% of other wastes. Amount of recyclable wastes are around 720 tons/day and among them around 576 tons are assumed to be recycled. Recyclable and reusable wastes such as plastic, paper, glass, metal, rubber are recovered by waste pickers, waste buyers and middle dealers from waste generating sources to different waste stream. Thee recycling stream comprises of waste pickers, waste buyers, middle dealers and recyclers. There are assumed to be around 6500 waste pickers, 6000 waste buyers and 2000 middle dealers in Yangon City. The collection of recyclable wastes by them is around 700 tons/day. These collected wastes are recycled or reused by the recyclers or other manufactures. There are around 1000 recyclers doing recycling of different types of materials. Among the generated wastes, plastic accounts for 11% of total generation and this bring the value of 242 ton/day of plastic waste generation. Of the 242 ton of plastic waste, 80% of which is 194 ton/day are assumed to be recycled. Recycling, being one of the important factors in integrated solid waste management which is 3Rs, reduce, reuse and recycle, it is important to know the existing situation of recycling system. In order to achieve the sustainability of such system, it is important know the working conditions and financial situations of the each sector of the recycling stream. Without the proper income and financial benefit, it will be hard for the survival of the personnel who are participated and involved in recycling stream. Therefore, this study is attempted to survey and estimate the income of each sector of recycling stream, possible risks and impacts to both environment and working conditions of the resource recovery and recycling business
