| 520 | _aLiterature on the storage and order picking policies of a POB AS/ RS is exiguous. Time-distance based storage policy is the only storage policy mentioned in the literature. This study proposed an alternative storage policy based on the concept of "Hinterland", which recognized the fact that the items are retrieved from the storage rack in the form of a tour. Another means of realising reductions in travel time is through restricting the picking area. Four storage policies were devised for picking area operation based on both Time-distance and Hinterland. The order picking policy was formulated as a case of the Traveling Salesman Problem. The above policies ignored the fact some groups of items may be requested together frequently in the orders retrieved from the rack. A storage policy based on "Complementary Hinterland" was developed to harness this grouping characteristic to attain lower travel times. Implementation of this storage policy required the development of an order picking policy based on the Traveling Purchaser Problem. To evaluate the performance of the storage and order picking policy combinations suggested, two simulation models, one for non-grouped and the other for grouped order structures, were constructed. Each policy was tested under a set of four different operation environments as defined by the different system parameters. The results show that savings of upto 75% are possible over random storage and random order picking policies through the implementation of rational storage policies. The study, besides furnishing a relative performance guide for the policies evaluated, also provides an insight into the impact of various system parameters on the performance of both storage and order picking policies. | ||
